Not the Last of Last Chance U!

Not the Last of Last Chance U!

Congratulations to our partner Greg Whiteley, whose sports documentary series Last Chance U has been brought back for a second season!

The six-episode series is set in the small college town of Scooba, Mississippi, and chronicles a collegiate football program made up of underdogs — players who could go all the way, but for various reasons have come to East Mississippi Community College (EMCC), in the hopes of returning to Division 1 football. It hit Netflix on July 29.

For Whiteley, whose other documentaries have included New York Doll, Most Likely to Succeed, and MITT, it was his first experience with episodic storytelling. As he told IndieWire, it was one he enjoyed very much and thought was perfect for the subject:

“One of the things I’m proud of is that there is a poetry and a cinema-like quality to this take on sports that I think is unique. There are lots of sports documentaries and sports programming, but I think where we landed fits in a pretty unique spot.”

In making the series, Whiteley and crew lived in Scooba – a town of 700 – for four months, and filmed behind-the-scenes action with players, coaches, administrators, and educators. They  followed the EMCC Lions in 2015 as they attempted to win their third consecutive national championship, fourth in five seasons.
